Across Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Cossack, Wickham and Point Samson, arts and culture bring people together through festivals, exhibitions, performances, markets and workshops. From discovering public art to trying something creative, locals and visitors can get involved in plenty of ways.
The Red Earth Arts Precinct, Karratha Arts & Learning Centre and Dampier Community Centre provide spaces to experience, learn and create. Highlights include the Red Earth Arts Festival, Cossack Art Awards, Dampier Art Awards and Dampier Photography Awards, alongside creative activities and community celebrations throughout the year.
Each town adds its own character to the region’s creative life. Cossack brings art and heritage together, while Roebourne is home to Aboriginal art and cultural organisations including Yinjaa-Barni Art, Cheeditha Art Group and Juluwarlu Group. Together, these communities celebrate the people, stories and connections to Country that make this part of the Pilbara so distinctive.
Onslow, Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Pannawonica & Karijini
Across the Shire of Ashburton, creativity is woven into community life through art awards, workshops, public art, markets, performances, heritage and local celebrations.
Onslow’s Passion of the Pilbara and Staircase to the Moon events bring the community together, while murals and public art add to the town’s character. The Onslow Visitor Centre and Goods Shed Museum share the area’s history, while the ruins and historic cemeteries of Old Onslow offer a glimpse into the original townsite and its early stories.
Tom Price has an active arts community, supported by the Tom Price Arts Hub and the annual Ashburton Art Awards. In Paraburdoo, public art and the much-loved Red Dog sculpture create a distinctive local identity, while Karingal Neighbourhood Centre offers arts and crafts activities and community events that bring people together. Pannawonica also hosts workshops and community events throughout the year.
Karijini National Park adds a powerful dimension to the region’s creative story. Its ancient landscapes, colours and cultural significance continue to inspire artists, photographers, storytellers and visitors.
Port Hedland & South Hedland Region
Port Hedland and South Hedland have a strong creative community shaped by Aboriginal heritage, multicultural influences and the region’s distinctive coastal and industrial landscapes.
The Courthouse Gallery+Studio presents exhibitions, workshops and the annual Jury Art Prize. Spinifex Hill Studio supports contemporary Aboriginal artists, while Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre shares and preserves language, culture and stories.
The Matt Dann Theatre & Cinema brings live performance, touring productions and film to South Hedland. Sunset Food Markets and the long-running Pilbara Music Festival Eisteddfod create further opportunities to participate and connect. Across Hedland, murals, sculptures and artist-led projects bring local stories and creativity into public spaces.
East Pilbara Region – Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine
Across the East Pilbara, art and storytelling are deeply connected to Country, community and the vast landscapes of one of Australia’s most remote regions.
Newman is the region’s creative hub and home to the East Pilbara Arts Centre and Martumili Artists which supports Martu artists to create, exhibit and share stories of Country and culture. The Newman Art Studio also offers workshops and hands-on creative activities, while murals and public art add colour and character to the town.
In Marble Bar and Nullagine, community events, cultural activities and visiting creative programs offer opportunities to participate, share stories and connect through the arts. Together, these communities showcase an East Pilbara identity grounded in Country, culture and creativity.
