This painting is a celebration of colour, warmth and the wild beauty of the Pilbara.
At the heart of the work, a bold sunflower rises from a field of delicate (yet resilient) wildflowers, its golden petals catching the light and drawing the eye. Surrounding it are layers of soft pinks, purples, yellows and earthy tones, inspired by the unexpected bursts of colour found across the Pilbara. The sunflower represents warmth, resilience and joy, while the surrounding wildflowers reflect the untamed character of the Pilbara, a landscape that can appear rugged and harsh, yet reveals an incredible softness and beauty when the wildflowers emerge.
I wanted this piece to feel almost dreamlike, blending the recognisable form of the sunflower with an impressionistic interpretation of a Pilbara wildflower scene. Loose, expressive marks and layered colour create movement throughout the painting, capturing the feeling of standing amongst wildflowers as they sway in the warm Pilbara sunshine.
Although the sunflower itself is not native to the Pilbara, I have used it as a symbol of strength and optimism, placing it within a landscape inspired by the wildflowers and colours of a region that I feel deeply connected to.
